China’s Marine Design & Research Institute (MARIC) has received LR approval for its design of a massive new car carrier. This behemoth, designed to hold a whopping 12,800 vehicles, is not only the world’s largest car carrier, but also a champion for clean shipping.

The secret sauce? Ammonia. This next-generation ship will be powered by an advanced ammonia fuel system, with the option to add solar panels and batteries for an extra green boost. Compared to traditional fuel oil, ammonia slashes greenhouse gas emissions by a staggering 89%.

But wait, there’s more! This car carrier isn’t just big, it’s smart. Adjustable decks can be configured to fit various vehicle sizes, maximizing space and efficiency. Plus, clever loading and unloading systems ensure a smooth flow of cars on and off the ship.

Flexibility is key. This design can run on a variety of fuels, including conventional oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, and even a dual-fuel option.

This project is a big win for eco-conscious shipping. The approval, awarded by Lloyd’s Register at a ceremony in Greece, marks a significant step towards a greener future for the industry. As Sau Weng Tang, a representative from Lloyd’s Register, said: “We’re thrilled to support MARIC in this ambitious project that will help reduce emissions across the shipping industry.”
