The Port of Shanghai has made history by becoming the first port worldwide to handle over 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in a single year. This achievement reinforces Shanghai’s position as the world’s busiest container port for the 14th consecutive year and highlights China’s growing role in global trade.
Shanghai’s extensive network connects to over 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions. This growth in volume results from increased exports and a higher number of international transfers, including ship-to-ship operations, which are expected to reach a record 60% in 2024.
Technology has played a vital role in enhancing the port’s efficiency. The 2017 launch of the Yangshan phase IV automated terminal increased efficiency by 30% while reducing workforce needs by 70%.
Looking to the future, the Port of Shanghai is prioritizing sustainability. It has partnered with the Ports of Los Angeles and Hamburg to develop eco-friendly shipping corridors. By 2030, Shanghai aims to become a “green energy fueling center,” significantly expanding its LNG and green methanol capacity.
