Two leading Japanese shipbuilders, Onomichi Dockyard and Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, have partnered to design a new dry bulk carrier, Bingo 42 (Beyond Innovation, Navigating Green Ocean). This collaboration combines their expertise to enhance vessel designs.

Typically, each yard handles the entire design process, which can be demanding, especially with the rise of alternative fuel ships. Both shipbuilders specialize in handy-size bulkers, and the Bingo 42 project seeks to streamline design and expand market share by sharing ideas and knowledge.

The focus was on a 42,000 dwt dry bulk carrier. The goal was to improve design productivity and boost orders under a unified brand. Onomichi and Tsuneishi will independently manage construction, sales, and structural design.

One significant change was lengthening the hull by 3 meters (nearly 10 feet), improving cargo capacity and fuel efficiency. This updated hull form is now part of both shipyards’ standard designs.

The Bingo 42 also features the MT-Fast energy-saving device, developed by MTI and NYK Group. It boosts propulsion efficiency by up to 4%. The vessel is designed to run on methanol dual fuel.

The new design cuts EEDI index emissions by over 35% compared to the reference line, meeting IMO standards.
