Panama’s Maritime Authority (PMA) has taken decisive action to revoke the registrations of six Panamanian-flagged vessels that were recently added to the UK’s sanctions list. This move is in line with the country’s commitment to upholding international sanctions and maintaining the integrity of its ship registry.
The PMA’s decision comes after the UK imposed its most extensive sanctions package targeting Russia’s shadow fleet. The UK government has sanctioned 73 Russian tankers, including the six vessels that were previously registered in Panama. These vessels have been instrumental in transporting billions of pounds worth of oil and refined products, supporting Russia’s war economy.
By revoking the registrations of these vessels, Panama aims to prevent them from operating under its flag and contributing to Russia’s illicit activities. This action demonstrates Panama’s commitment to international law and its role in combating illicit maritime activities.
