The Indian government has launched a new initiative, Jalvahak, to promote the use of inland waterways for long-distance cargo transportation. This move aims to reduce congestion on roads and railways, improve efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.
The scheme will focus on key routes such as Kolkata-Patna-Varanasi and Kolkata-Pandu (Guwahati). The government is offering significant incentives, including a 35% reimbursement of operating costs for cargo transported over 300 kilometers.
To kickstart the initiative, three cargo vessels—MV TRISHUL, MV HOMI BHABA, and MV AAI—were flagged off. These vessels will transport cement, coal, and gypsum, respectively.
By shifting cargo transportation from roads and railways to inland waterways, India aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve overall logistics efficiency. The Jalvahak scheme is a step towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation system in India.
