Hapag-Lloyd has placed a significant order for 24 new container ships from Chinese shipyards. This $4 billion investment will bolster the company’s fleet and enhance its sustainability efforts.

The new vessels, which are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028, will be powered by high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engines. This technology allows the ships to operate on cleaner-burning LNG, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the ships are designed to be “ammonia-ready,” enabling a future transition to zero-carbon fuels like ammonia.

With a capacity of 9,000 TEU and 17,000 TEU, these vessels offer flexibility and adaptability to changing trade patterns. They can call at a wider range of ports, providing greater operational efficiency.

This investment aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to sustainable shipping. The company aims to reduce its emissions by one-third by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. By upgrading its fleet with modern, efficient vessels, Hapag-Lloyd is taking a proactive step towards a greener future.
